90% of brands have zero AI search mentions. The Australian opportunity

    4 min read

    The number

In a Q1 2026 study of 177 brands across 8 AI platforms, 89.8% had zero AI mentions. Only 18 brands registered at all.

There is a lot of noise suggesting the AI-visibility race is already won. The data says the opposite - almost nobody has even started.

    How invisible are most brands?

A Q1 2026 study tested 177 brands across eight AI platforms - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Meta AI. 89.8% had zero mentions. Of the 177, only 18 registered at all. A separate study found 72% of brands actively investing in SEO still receive zero citations from AI search engines.

Doesn't good Google ranking carry over?

No - and this is the trap. 81% of brands cited by ChatGPT do not rank on Google at all. Traditional SEO and AI visibility are two different games. You can sit at the top of Google and be completely invisible inside the answer your customer actually reads.

Why is this an opportunity, not just a warning?

Because the category is empty. Most marketing races mean fighting an entire field of established players. AI visibility is the opposite - in nearly every Australian vertical you are competing against a handful of incumbents, not the whole category. The business that takes it seriously now is up against single digits of rivals. That window closes as more businesses wake up. Here is why most businesses are not showing up in ChatGPT in the first place.

    Where do you start?

You cannot fix what you cannot see. The first step is simply knowing your AI mention rate today - which engines name you, which name your competitors, and for which questions. Everything else follows from that baseline.
