How often do AI search answers change? Why daily tracking beats weekly
The number
AI Overview answers change for the same query roughly 70% of the time, and when they do, about half the cited sources get swapped out. Only around 30% of brands stay visible in back-to-back answers.
Traditional SEO trained everyone to think in months. You climb slowly, you check in now and then, the position holds. AI search does not work like that. Volatility is now measured in weeks, sometimes days.
How volatile is it, really?
Ask an AI engine the same question twice and the answer changes around 70% of the time. When it changes, roughly half the cited sources are replaced. Only about 30% of brands stay visible in back-to-back responses for the same query. You can be in the answer this morning and gone by this afternoon - without changing anything yourself.
Why does fresh content win?
AI engines are biased toward recency. Perplexity cites content published within the last 30 days at an 82% rate. Pages updated within the past two months earn 28% more citations than older ones. The engines actively reward freshness, which is exactly why the answers keep moving.
The engines do not even agree with each other
Of 680 million AI citations analysed, only 11% of domains were cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Perplexity averages 21.9 citations per response; ChatGPT averages 10.4. "Are we visible in AI search?" has a different answer for every engine - and each one is moving independently.
Why daily tracking beats weekly
A weekly snapshot can miss an entire swing. You could drop out on Tuesday, climb back by Friday, and a weekly check would show "no change" while you lost three days of visibility. The only way to see the movement is to look daily. This is the flip side of the click collapse Google AI Overviews are causing.
